KnownGood: Test Instrument Record — Coming soon to the App Store

Frequently Asked Questions

What is KnownGood?

KnownGood is a record for your test instruments on iPhone and iPad: multifunction testers, insulation and loop testers, flue gas analysers, detector testers, lux meters and more. It keeps each instrument’s calibration certificates and due dates, your own checks against a reference between certificates, and repairs and other events, and exports a PDF record for each instrument.

Who is it for?

Electricians, gas engineers, fire alarm and emergency lighting engineers, and anyone who looks after test instruments for a team.

Is KnownGood available yet?

Not yet. KnownGood is coming soon to the App Store. This page will link to it as soon as it’s live.

How do checks work?

Set up each instrument’s functions and test points once, for example continuity on a checkbox at 0.5 Ω and 1 Ω. When you run a check, you record the reference you used and its due date, then enter each reading. The first check sets your baseline. Later readings are compared with that baseline and the tolerance you chose, and anything outside it is marked Flagged so you can decide what to do. KnownGood never decides whether an instrument is fit for use: that judgement stays with you.

How does KnownGood relate to BS 7671?

KnownGood is a record-keeping tool. Many electricians keep instrument records alongside their work to BS 7671, and KnownGood helps you keep those records in one place. It does not test, check or sign off any instrument, and it does not replace a calibration certificate from a calibration lab. BS 7671 is published by the IET and BSI. KnownGood is an independent app, not affiliated with or endorsed by the IET, BSI or any assessment scheme.

What happens when a certificate is due?

Each instrument shows its certificate due date. If you allow notifications, KnownGood reminds you 30 days and 7 days before, and on the day. Once the date has passed, the instrument shows “Certificate due date passed” until you record the new certificate.

How do I export the PDF record?

Open an instrument, tap Export PDF, choose the date range and which sections to include, then share, print or save it to Files. The PDF includes the certificates, checks with the reference used, events, remarks and your sign-off with your saved signature. Every page is A4. The PDF is a record only. KnownGood does not verify, calibrate or certify any instrument.

What does the free version include?

One active instrument with certificates, checks, events, reminders and PDF export. There are no ads and no time limit.

What does KnownGood Pro include?

Unlimited instruments, your company name, logo and contact details on PDFs, and iCloud sync across your iPhone and iPad. Pro is £24.99 a year with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, or £74.99 once for lifetime access.

How do I cancel the yearly subscription or free trial?

Open the Settings app, then go to [your name] → Subscriptions → KnownGood and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or current year ends to avoid being charged. Deleting the App does not cancel the subscription.

How do I restore my Pro purchase?

Open Settings in the App and tap “Restore Purchases”. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used to buy Pro.

What happens if my subscription ends?

Nothing is deleted. Your first-added instrument that is in use stays editable; the others stay viewable and can still be exported to PDF. iCloud sync pauses until Pro is active again.

Where is my data stored? Do I need to sign up?

No sign-up is needed. Your records are kept in the app, so they stay with you. With Pro you can turn on iCloud sync, which keeps your records in your own private iCloud account. Your saved signature stays on the iPhone or iPad where you drew it. We cannot see your data. See the Privacy Policy.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. You can record checks, certificates and events and export PDFs without a connection. iCloud sync catches up the next time you are online.

I’m not getting reminders

Check that notifications are allowed for KnownGood in iOS Settings → Notifications, and that the instrument has a certificate with a due date. Focus modes can also hide reminders.
